Towns and Villages of Santorini

Santorini has a lot of traditional villages, each one with its own history, style and character.  A visit at each one of them will show you a part of the past of the island of Santorini.

  Fira

Fira - The main town of Santorini - Thira

Fira is the main town of the island of Santorini.

It is the center of acitivity on the island in the sense that most major services are based there: buses, taxis, shops, museums, etc. However, it is not close to the beach

  Akrotiri

Akrotiri is located at the south-west part of santorini.

It is home to the remains of ancient Thira (santorini) that it was covered in lava thousands of years ago. A must see.

  Imerovigli

imergovigli - santorini - thira - caldera view

Imerovigli is one of the nicest parts of the island.  Very nice view, wonderful sunset and simply a very nice location for you to enjoy the view of the caldera-volcano.

Just sit at one of the local cafes and enjoy the view.  Just wonderful.

  Vlychada

vlychada - santorini -thira

If you are looking for a relatively remote and more quiet place the Vlychada may be a good choice for you.   Its beach was recently populated with palm trees and the vilage is also home to a floating-cafe.  Vlychada is also the the starting location of underwater tours with a submarine.

  Kamari

kamari beach and village- santorini - thira

Kamari is ideal if what you are looking for is a place with  beach with bars, cafes, shops and restaurant by it.  A long pedestrian road by the beach is perfect for an evening walk.

The village also has an open-air cinema.

  Thirassia

thirasia island - santorini - volcano

Thirassia is not actually a village.  It is a small island remainant of ancient “Strogili” island opposite the island of Thira (most people call it santorini). It is a quiet place with a lot of sea food restaurants and you can go there with one of the small local boats (usually as part of a tour).

Other Villages

Vourvoulos A village with traditional architecture, at a quiet location and relatively close to the villages of Imerovigli and Firostefani.
Emborio,  Perissa Emborio (aka Emporio) is the largest town/village on the island. However Fira is considered to be the "capital".   Very close to it there is the beach of Perissa, which is longs and becomes the beach of Perivolos as it continues.
Exo Gonia This is a traditional small village with view to the the airport and the beach of Kamari.
Karterados The best way to describe it is as a suburb of Fira. It is located on the way to the village of Kamari.
Megalohori Another traditional village that has kept its characted through the recent changing years.
Messaria This village is actually the crossroad of the main roads on the island. Whether you go to the airport or to Kamari, Fira, Pyrgos, etc you will most likely be passing through it.
Vothonas A Traditional village of Santorini, between Exo Gonia and Messaria.
Pirgos It is the highest point of the island and as such you can more or less see the whole island from there. Hence its name which means 'tower'. It is home to the  Monastery of 'Profitis Illias'.
Ia or Oia Ia is another place with a great view on Santornini. Located at the top end of the island provides a magnificent view to the old and new port as well as the rest of the island.
