Santorini itineraries for one, three, five or seven days
Use these plans as a starting framework, then adapt them to your arrival point, base, interests and current transport. A full day on the island is different from a day that includes an airport transfer or cruise tender. The aim is to group places sensibly and leave time to enjoy them, rather than crossing the island repeatedly to complete a list.

Start with the fixed points
Place arrival, departure and any confirmed booking on the calendar first. Check the transport from your accommodation to each area and back. Fira is the main bus hub, so a route that looks short on a map may still involve a change. Choose fewer places when a day includes several transport stages.
Check cultural-site opening for the actual date. Ancient Thera was subject to the operator’s closure from 27 June 2026 until further notice when researched on 4 November. Red Beach is also covered by a published municipal access prohibition. Neither is treated as an ordinary open stop in these plans.
One day: a focused caldera visit
Begin in Fira and choose time in the town and a manageable public section towards Firostefani or Imerovigli if it suits the group and conditions. Pause for a meal and the caldera view. This keeps the day focused on one connected area instead of combining distant beaches, archaeology and Oia in a few hours.
If Oia is your main priority, make it the central outing instead: confirm the complete outward and return transport and leave time for the village itself. Cruise visitors must work from the ship’s tender arrangements and all-aboard instructions; the plan is deliberately shorter when time ashore is uncertain.
- Choose Fira and nearby caldera time, or an Oia-focused day, rather than forcing both into every short visit.
- Add a museum only if opening and your return margin fit.
- Keep a sunset plan conditional on the transport needed afterwards.
Three days: the caldera, history and the coast
For a first stay with three full days, give each day a distinct theme. Keep the caldera day together, pair southwest archaeology with a village stop, and choose one beach area for a slower day. You can switch the order to fit opening days, weather and bookings.
At Akrotiri, use the Ephorate and official ticket hub for current visitor information. A stop in Megalochori can complement that southwest outing if the transport works. For the beach day, choose Kamari or Perissa/Perivolos rather than assuming that crossing between beach bases is the best use of the afternoon.
| Day | Main grouping | How to keep it workable |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Caldera | Fira, Firostefani or Imerovigli; Oia only with a clear onward plan | Choose the walking section and check the return before extending the day |
| 2 — Southwest history | Akrotiri archaeological site and Megalochori | Verify site opening, then assess the actual transport between stops |
| 3 — Coast | Kamari, or Perissa and Perivolos | Use one beach area and keep the pace flexible |
Five days: add villages and a planned experience
Use the three-day framework, then add a day centred on Pyrgos and, if the route suits you, Emporio. Their hillside and fortified-village settings bring a different perspective from the caldera waterfront. Check the approach and walking involved rather than assuming every village visit has the same terrain.
Use the other additional day for one confirmed experience: a boat excursion, a wine-related visit or another activity that interests your group. Check its starting point, duration, transport and change arrangements directly. Keep this day movable where possible, particularly for an outing dependent on conditions at sea.
- Day 4: choose Pyrgos, with Emporio as an optional second village if transport and energy fit.
- Day 5: one confirmed experience, followed by time near your base.
- If the experience changes, use a museum or a previously shortened village visit as an alternative.
Seven days: leave room for the island to feel like a holiday
With a week, retain the five-day framework but reduce the pressure on individual days. Give the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira its own useful time rather than squeezing it into the end of an unrelated outing. Its prehistoric material can add context to Akrotiri without turning both visits into one rushed sequence.
Keep another day open for a return to a favourite village, more beach time or an activity postponed for conditions. A week does not require seven completely different routes. Repeating a place at a different time can be more satisfying than another checkout, transfer or long bus chain.
| Additional day | Main idea | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| 6 — Culture and a slower town visit | Museum of Prehistoric Thera and unhurried time in Fira | Another operating cultural venue that fits your interests |
| 7 — Flexible day | Return to a favourite area or move a confirmed weather-dependent outing here | Rest near the accommodation and simplify the departure plan |
Adapt the plan to your group and season
For children, a mixed-ability group or a stay outside summer, shorten the number of stops before adding complex transport. Confirm the facilities you need at the base and ask about steps and the road-to-door route. A beach area can still be a pleasant coast visit when swimming is not part of the plan.
Keep the final important connection clear. If a separately booked ferry and flight form the journey home, review the buffer and available alternatives rather than filling the last hours with an excursion. The itinerary should make the travel easier, with the ability to change a day when current opening, access or weather requires it.
Common questions
- Are three days enough for Santorini?
- Three full days can support a focused introduction: the caldera villages, Akrotiri with a southwest village stop, and one coast day. Arrival and departure days may provide less usable time, so adapt the plan to the journeys you actually have.
- Should I visit Ancient Thera during this itinerary?
- These plans do not rely on entering Ancient Thera. The operator’s dated notice closed it from 27 June 2026 until further notice, still relevant at the research check. Recheck the official announcement before treating it as an open visit.
- How should I change the plan if a boat trip cannot run?
- Ask the operator about the available change arrangements. If possible, move the outing to a flexible day and use a currently operating museum, village visit or time near your base instead. Confirm opening before substituting another venue.
