Practical Santorini guide

Santorini Photography Guide

Practical photography advice for Santorini: sunrise, sunset, blue domes, villages, volcanic landscapes, drones and respectful shooting.

Reviewed 6 September 2026 · Santorini (Thera), Cyclades, Greece

Best light

Early morning is invaluable in Oia and Fira because streets are quieter as well as cooler. Sunset is spectacular but crowded at famous viewpoints.

Beyond Oia

Pyrgos, Emporio, Megalochori, Vlychada and the vineyards provide strong subjects without reproducing the same caldera composition.

Private property

Do not climb roofs, walls or hotel terraces for a shot. Many iconic blue-domed viewpoints sit beside homes and churches.

Drones

Drone rules and restricted zones can change, particularly around airports and populated areas. Check current Greek/EU aviation rules before flying; never assume a scenic location permits drone use.
