Santorini Car Rental Guide

You do not automatically need a car in Santorini; rent one when it clearly improves a specific itinerary.

Reviewed 2026-09-06 · Santorini (Thera), Cyclades, Greece

When a car is useful

It is useful for combining Pyrgos, Megalochori, Akrotiri, Vlychada and wineries on your own schedule, or when staying away from bus-friendly areas.

When it is unnecessary

For a short stay based in Fira with one Oia day, one organised cruise and one beach trip, buses and transfers can be simpler.

Parking and driving

The island has narrow roads, heavy seasonal traffic and limited parking in popular villages. Choose the smallest suitable vehicle and do not build an itinerary around impossible parking assumptions.

Before renting

Driving practicalities

A rental car is useful for multi-stop days, but it is not automatically the best choice for Oia/Fira sightseeing. Parking near the caldera settlements is limited and roads can be congested. Confirm licence requirements, insurance excess, fuel policy and where the vehicle may be parked overnight before accepting the car.

For airport or ferry-port collection, confirm the exact desk/meeting point and opening arrangements if your arrival is late or delayed.
