Getting Around Santorini
The best transport choice depends less on distance than on where you stay, how many separate stops you want and whether you are travelling at peak times.
Public buses
Fira is the main hub for the island bus network. Buses can work very well for simple out-and-back trips, but journeys between two non-Fira destinations may require changing in Fira. Check current timetables locally.
Taxis and private transfers
Useful for airport/port movements, dinner reservations and itineraries where waiting for a bus would cost too much time. In peak season, availability can be constrained.
Rental cars
A car is most valuable for an inland-and-south-island day with several stops. Parking around Oia and Fira can be difficult at busy times.
ATVs and scooters
They are common rentals, but exposure, road conditions and mixed traffic require experience and caution. Choose safety over convenience.
Walking
Within villages, walking is often the only way to explore properly. Steep steps are a defining feature of many caldera properties and routes.

How the bus network works
Fira is the hub, so a trip such as Kamari → Oia will often mean Kamari → Fira and then Fira → Oia. This is why a bus-only holiday is easiest when you stay in Fira or plan one main destination at a time. Buy tickets according to the operator’s current arrangements and check the posted return time before walking away from a remote stop.
When a taxi or transfer is worth it
Use one for fixed-time movements—airport check-in, ferry departures, late dinners—or when several people can share the fare. In high season taxis are limited relative to demand, so do not wait until the last minute for an airport or port departure.
