Understand the island

Santorini History

Santorini’s landscape and settlement pattern make far more sense once you see geology and history as one story.

Prehistoric Thera and Akrotiri

Akrotiri developed into an important Aegean settlement before a major volcanic event in the 17th century BC. Excavations reveal sophisticated buildings, drainage and far-reaching contacts.

The volcano reshapes the map

Repeated volcanic phases formed and re-formed the caldera landscape. The present island complex includes Thera, Thirasia and the Kameni islets.

Later settlement

Ancient Thera developed on Mesa Vouno in later historical periods. Medieval and Venetian-era settlement patterns also remain visible in fortified inland villages such as Pyrgos and Emporio.

Modern tourism

Santorini’s global tourism identity grew around the caldera villages, architecture, sunsets, wine and volcanic landscape. That popularity now makes route planning and crowd-aware timing part of the visitor experience.

A practical timeline

Prehistory: Akrotiri became a sophisticated Bronze Age settlement before being buried by volcanic material. Archaic to Roman periods: Ancient Thera on Mesa Vouno preserves evidence of later settlement. Byzantine period: churches such as Panagia Episkopi reflect the island’s religious history. Medieval and Venetian centuries: fortified kastelia developed at strategic settlements. 1956: a destructive earthquake changed many communities, particularly Oia and Mesa Gonia. Modern reconstruction and tourism subsequently transformed the island’s economy and built environment.

Where to experience the history

Do not try to understand Santorini from one archaeological site. Pair Akrotiri with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, visit Ancient Thera, walk a fortified village such as Emporio or Pyrgos, and look at the island’s architecture, castles and churches as parts of the same story.
