Santorini Villages Guide

Santorini’s villages fall into different types: caldera settlements, inland fortified communities, cave-house villages and beach resorts.

Reviewed 2026-09-06 · Santorini (Thera), Cyclades, Greece

Caldera villages

Oia, Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli line the caldera side. They deliver the iconic geometry of white buildings against volcanic cliffs, but each has a different level of transport convenience and evening activity.

Inland villages

Pyrgos, Megalochori and Emporio are better for traditional street patterns, wine country and a less hotel-dominated atmosphere.

Choose by route, not by checklist

If you have three days, you do not need ten village stops. Combine nearby places into logical half-days and leave time to stay put.

Getting there

Practical transport for Santorini villages

Fira and Oia have the easiest public-transport logic. For several inland villages in one day, a rental car, taxi itinerary or tour can be more efficient than repeatedly returning to the Fira bus hub.
