Where you stay changes the character—and often the cost—of a Santorini trip more than almost any other decision.
Stay in Fira for convenience
Fira is the island’s transport and commercial centre. It is the easiest base for bus users and offers a wide spread of restaurants, shops and nightlife. The trade-off is bustle: it feels like a working tourism hub rather than a secluded resort.
Stay in Oia for the iconic setting
Oia is the strongest choice when cliff-edge architecture, sunset atmosphere and a special-occasion setting outweigh convenience. It is photogenic and walkable within the village, but trips to southern beaches, Akrotiri or the airport take more planning.
Stay in Imerovigli or Firostefani for caldera calm
Both sit between Fira and Oia. Imerovigli is known for elevated caldera views and a quieter evening rhythm; Firostefani is close enough to walk into Fira while feeling less central.
Stay in Kamari or Perissa for beach access and value
These east/southeast coast resorts are flatter and usually give you more space for the money. They suit families, beach-oriented stays and travellers who prefer a conventional resort base over a cliff-edge room.
Stay in Pyrgos or Megalochori for village atmosphere
Inland bases work for travellers who want wine country, traditional streets and a more residential feel. A car or planned transfers make these choices much easier.

Where to Stay in Santorini FAQ
Where should first-time visitors stay?
Fira is the safest all-round recommendation for a first visit without a car. Imerovigli is stronger if caldera views and quiet matter more; Oia if the iconic setting is the main reason for the trip.
Is a caldera-view hotel worth it?
It can be, particularly for short stays where the room and terrace are part of the experience. For longer trips, a split stay or a beach/inland base can buy much more space for the same budget.
Before you book a location
Check transport access as well as the view
On Santorini, two hotels a few hundred metres apart can have very different practical access. Before paying, ask whether a taxi can reach reception, how many steps there are from the road to the room, where luggage is dropped, and how far the nearest bus stop is.
Fira is simplest for buses; beach resorts are flatter; many caldera properties trade convenience for views. If you have an early flight or ferry, price the transfer before choosing a remote property.
