Things to Do in Santorini

The best Santorini experiences are not all in Oia. Mix caldera scenery with archaeology, villages, volcanic landscapes, food and the coast.

1. Walk part or all of the caldera trail

The Fira-to-Oia trail is the island’s defining walk. The full route links Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia, with exposed sections and repeated caldera views. Start early in warm weather and carry water. If the full walk is too much, use the Fira-to-Imerovigli section for a shorter taste.

2. Visit Akrotiri and the prehistoric museum

Akrotiri preserves a major Bronze Age settlement beneath volcanic deposits. Pair the archaeological site with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira: one gives you the streets and buildings, the other gives you objects and context.

3. See the volcano from the water

Caldera cruises commonly include Nea Kameni, thermal-water stops and sometimes Thirasia. Choose by route, boat size, duration and whether you want sunset on board rather than by the word “cruise” alone.

4. Explore inland villages

Pyrgos, Megalochori and Emporio show a different Santorini: fortified settlement patterns, narrow lanes, churches, old houses and wine country rather than continuous cliff-edge hotels.

5. Spend time on the volcanic coast

Perissa, Perivolos and Kamari are the easiest beach bases. Santorini is not primarily a classic pale-sand beach island; its shoreline is part of the volcanic story, with dark sand, pebbles and striking cliffs.

Common questions

Things to Do in Santorini FAQ

What is the one thing not to miss?

For a first visit, the caldera itself is the essential experience. See it on foot from Fira or Imerovigli, then from the water if your schedule allows.

Are Santorini attractions spread out?

Yes. Most headline sights are within a relatively small island, but steep roads, traffic and the port access road can make transfers slower than expected.
