Santorini Beaches Guide

Santorini’s beaches are visually distinctive rather than classically Cycladic: think black sand, pebbles, volcanic cliffs and dark rock.

Best for an easy beach day

Perissa and adjoining Perivolos provide a long organised stretch with restaurants, sunbeds and water activities. Kamari offers a similarly convenient resort beach on the opposite side of Mesa Vouno.

Red Beach needs realistic expectations

Red Beach is famous for its setting near Akrotiri, but access conditions can change and cliffs require caution. Treat it as a landscape stop first, not automatically the island’s best swimming day.

Vlychada for landscape

Vlychada is defined by sculpted pale volcanic cliffs and a less urban feel. It pairs well with south-island itineraries.

What the sand is like

Dark volcanic sand can become extremely hot in strong sun. Footwear you can wear close to the water is more useful here than on many pale-sand islands.

Getting there

Practical transport for Santorini beaches

For a simple bus-based beach day, Kamari and Perissa are among the easiest options from Fira. Vlychada and more dispersed coastal stops require more careful transport planning.

More Santorini beaches

Beyond Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari, Red Beach and Vlychada, consider White Beach, Cape Columbo, Katharos and Monolithos. Santorini is not a classic soft-white-sand island: its appeal is the variety of volcanic colours, cliffs and landscapes.

Which beach should you choose?

Families and easy facilities: Kamari, Perissa or Monolithos. Restaurants and a long organised shore: Perivolos. Landscape: Vlychada or the Red Beach viewpoint. Quieter/less organised: Cape Columbo or Katharos, subject to wind and sea conditions. Boat-access scenery: White Beach.

Wind, footwear and safety

Dark sand can become extremely hot. Bring footwear that can reach the water, sun protection and drinking water. Exposed beaches can be uncomfortable or unsafe in strong wind or swell; choose a more sheltered alternative rather than forcing a plan. At cliff-backed beaches, stay away from unstable rock faces and obey local warnings.
