Travel safely

Santorini Travel Safety

Most visitor risks in Santorini are ordinary but amplified by the terrain: heat, steep edges, traffic, sea conditions and crowded transport points.

Reviewed 2026-09-06 · Santorini (Thera), Cyclades, Greece

Heat and exposure

Carry water, avoid exposed hikes at peak heat and use sun protection. The caldera trail and Nea Kameni have little shade.

Cliffs and beaches

Respect barriers and local warnings, particularly near unstable cliffs and routes such as Red Beach. Photographs from previous years do not establish current access.

Roads and rental vehicles

Narrow roads, traffic and unfamiliar vehicles increase risk. Do not choose an ATV or scooter simply because it is marketed as an island experience.

Seismic and volcanic information

Santorini is part of an active volcanic region. For current seismic or civil-protection information, follow Greek authorities and official tourism guidance rather than social media speculation.
