How to Get to Santorini
Santorini has both an airport and a ferry port, which makes it straightforward to reach—but arrivals can become congested in peak periods.
Fly to Santorini Airport (JTR)
Domestic flights connect Santorini with Athens, and seasonal international routes operate from many European cities. Flight schedules change by season, so search by airport code JTR rather than assuming a route runs year-round.
Travel by ferry
Ferries connect Santorini with Athens-area ports and other Cycladic islands. Vessel type matters: high-speed services can be faster but conventional ferries may offer more deck space and a different ride.
Athinios is the ferry port
Athinios sits below steep caldera roads and is not in Fira. Build transfer time into arrival and departure plans, especially when several ferries overlap.
Do not make tight same-day connections
Wind, ferry sequencing, traffic and baggage all create uncertainty. Leave a meaningful buffer between ferry arrival and a flight or another fixed departure.

From Athens: fly or take the ferry?
Flying from Athens is usually the fastest option once you are already at Athens Airport. Ferry travel makes more sense if you want the sea journey, are connecting from another island, or your wider itinerary naturally uses Piraeus or another port. Check the actual travel date before deciding: frequency and journey times vary considerably by season and vessel.
When you land or dock
Airport buses run to Fira, the island’s main public-transport hub. Ferry-port buses also feed into Fira. For Oia, Imerovigli, beach resorts or accommodation with significant luggage/steps, compare the bus connection with a taxi or pre-booked transfer before arrival.
