Why visit Pyrgos
The historic centre climbs around a former fortified core, creating a maze of lanes and viewpoints. It is especially useful for seeing how inland Santorini differs from the cliff settlements.
Combine it with wine country
Pyrgos sits well for a half-day that includes a winery or Megalochori. This combination reduces unnecessary cross-island travel compared with treating every village as a separate excursion.
When to go
Late afternoon is attractive, but midday can work better than Oia because the visit is less dependent on one sunset viewpoint.
Getting there
Practical transport for Pyrgos
Pyrgos is inland and uphill. A bus or taxi is easier than approaching on foot from distant resorts. Parking can become tight around the village centre, so avoid assuming you can leave a rental car beside your restaurant or viewpoint.
