What the caldera is
Santorini belongs to an active volcanic system. Successive eruptions and collapses shaped the flooded caldera and the island complex visible today.
Visiting Nea Kameni
Many boat excursions land on Nea Kameni for a walk across dark volcanic terrain. The route is exposed, with little shade; closed footwear, water and sun protection matter.
Thermal-water stops
Some tours include swimming near Palaia Kameni where warmer mineral-rich water enters the sea. Conditions and swimming ability matter, and the stop should not be confused with a conventional spa.
Choose the cruise by itinerary
Compare departure point, boat capacity, time ashore, swimming stops, food and sunset timing. “Sunset cruise” can describe very different products.

Practical volcano-trip advice
Nea Kameni is exposed, rocky and hot in strong sun. Bring water, sun protection and footwear suitable for uneven volcanic ground. Boat departure points vary, so check whether your ticket starts at the Old Port below Fira, Athinios, Ammoudi or another marina.
Wind and sea conditions can alter itineraries; confirm with the operator on the day.
